Researchers at UC San Diego create virtual cells using AI and digital twins

Scientists at the University of California San Diego have developed virtual cell models to study mitochondrial networks and speed up drug discovery.

New methods capture moving mitochondria

Researchers used 4D lattice light-sheet microscopy to record how mitochondria move in three dimensions over time. This technique captures dynamic changes that previous flat images could not show.

Two approaches build digital models

One method trained a deep-learning AI model on 40,000 movies of drug-treated cells to predict health from shape. The second approach built a digital twin by defining rules for how internal structures behave.

Models mimic living cell processes

These virtual cells replicate the biological processes of real mitochondria splitting and fusing within a network. The models allow scientists to test new treatments based on cellular health markers.
