Study finds Renaissance and later pigments
Analysis shows most color materials match those used during the Renaissance period. A different pigment found in the work suggests changes made at a later time. The painting depicts Roman Emperor Domitian and was previously attributed to Titian before the new signature appeared.
Team uses spectroscopy for chemical check
Jakob Thyr and Tomas Edvinsson applied Raman spectroscopy to inspect the chemical properties of the artwork. This method helps reveal structural details about the substances mixed by the artist or restorers. The research team published their results in the journal Materials Today Advances.

Current owners contacted researchers at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering for assistance. Lars Hälldahl arranged the contact after working with Jakob Thyr on similar art projects. The study aims to clarify the history behind this specific piece of art.
