Rare Bog Grass Moth found in north Wales nature reserve
Conservationists recorded a rare Bog Grass Moth at Cors Geirch National Nature Reserve in Gwynedd during a species survey.
First sighting in this area
Experts collected 19 of these insects among 446 total moths trapped in one night. This marks the first time the species has been recorded at this specific location on the Llŷn Peninsula.
Habitat conditions support survival
The site contains wet sedges which serve as the only food source for the larvae of this moth. Natural Resources Wales noted that these plants are common in low, flat, wet land environments.
Other rare species present
Survey teams also identified a Six Spotted Crane Fly and a Black Nightrunner Ground Beetle at the site. Lepidopterists Steve Palin and Charles Aron described the trapping process as unpredictable regarding which species might appear.
