Proteome analysis confirms Xujiayao fossils belong to Denisovan lineage
Researchers in China have used protein analysis and skull comparisons to prove Middle Pleistocene Xujiayao hominins are part of the Denisovan group.

Protein evidence links fossils to Denisovans
Scientists analyzed two specimens from the Xujiayao site and found 18 endogenous proteins. A specific mutation in the COL1A2 gene strongly supports their affiliation with the Denisovan lineage. This genetic marker distinguishes them from other archaic human groups.
Shared physical traits define the group
Extended analysis shows Xujiayao shares morphological features with Harbin and other East Asian fossils like Jinniushan. These shared traits indicate that all these sites belong to the same Denisovan lineage. The group displays a mix of ancient and modern human characteristics.
Distinctive skull features appear in samples
The skulls show a low profile with near-parallel lateral walls and a massive brow ridge. Some structures resemble Homo erectus while others match modern humans or late Neanderthals. The temporal labyrinth structure is similar to that found in late Neanderthal remains.
