Princeton researchers map new path to fusion ignition using less energy

Physicists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory have published a reformulated equation for reaching fusion ignition conditions.

New approach to ignition

Researchers at PPPL have developed a method that requires far less energy than previous paths to reach ignition. This new work adds four specific conditions to the original Lawson criterion equation from the 1950s. The study was published in the journal Physical Review Letters.

Definition of burning plasma

A burning plasma is defined as one that sustains itself through fusion reactions without external heating. Reaching this state efficiently remains a central goal for fusion energy research. The team plans to use these conditions to design better heating systems.
