Pennsylvania engineers show quantum skyrmions survive entanglement disruption
University of Pennsylvania researchers published a study in Nature Physics showing that topological quantum patterns persist after entanglement is broken.

New method uses topology for resilience
Engineers at the University of Pennsylvania built a chip to generate entangled photon pairs. They applied a specific polarization pattern called a skyrmion to one of the photons. This topological property allowed the system to maintain its state even when the connection between particles was severed.
Pattern transfers remotely without loss
The team successfully transferred the engraved skyrmion pattern from a single photon to the shared quantum state of both particles. Disruption strong enough to break entanglement did not destroy the topological feature. The researchers observed that the unique movement persisted despite the fundamental obstacle of fragile quantum information.
