Pakistan workers warn green economy shift risks leaving informal sector behind

Speakers at a Wednesday discussion in Karachi argued that Pakistan's transition to a green economy must include workers from the informal sector.

Organisers call for worker inclusion

The Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research hosted the event titled Towards a Sustainable and Just Future for Workers. Director Abbas Haider stated that a just transition requires giving importance to workers when industries move from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

Experts highlight power and cost issues

Sidra Saeed of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung noted that a just transition involves participation and the social contract beyond just energy. She added that expensive renewable technology means only a few can currently afford to shift from fossil fuels to electric options.

Vulnerable groups face climate impacts

Abida Ali stated that countries like Nepal and Pakistan bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least. Saeed Baloch of the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum said industrialisation drove emissions which now hit the most vulnerable communities.
