Pakistan study finds one in three adults has mental disorder
A new national survey led by researchers from Hamdard University and UK partners reveals that nearly one in three adults in Pakistan lives with a diagnosable mental or behavioural disorder.

Survey scope and participation details
The five-year research project involved nearly 18,000 participants from all four provinces. It was published in the British Medical Journal and represents the largest mental health study ever conducted in the country.
Prevalence of specific conditions
Results show that 32 per cent of adults currently live with a disorder, while one in five met criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder. More than one in ten adults reported depression, and six per cent experienced suicidal thoughts in the previous month.
Lifetime experience and inequalities
The data indicates that 38 per cent of adults have experienced a disorder during their lifetime. Researchers also identified significant social inequalities, noting higher rates among older adults.
