OAS warns Latin America faces severe El Niño impacts in 2027
The Organization of American States reports that a very strong El Niño event in 2027 will threaten water, food and power supplies across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Drought risks for some regions
Rainfall reductions of up to 80 percent are expected in specific areas. The Central American Dry Corridor and parts of Colombia and Venezuela could face intense droughts. These conditions also threaten energy production and public health in those locations.
Flooding threats for other areas
Coastal Ecuador, northern Peru and central-southern Chile are projected to see surplus precipitation. The La Plata Basin involving Argentina and Brazil faces high risks of landslides. Torrential rain in these zones could lead to severe flooding events.
Preparedness urged for 2026
Member states must strengthen prevention measures during the final months of 2026. The technical brief calls for anticipatory action before the phenomenon reaches peak intensity in late 2027.
