Norway opens first fully automated lettuce farm near Oslo
A fully automated vegetable production facility in Gardermoen near Oslo began operations last fall and started selling products this spring.
Automated lettuce production process
The facility operates without human contact from sowing until the customer opens the package at home. Robots handle all tasks including growing and packaging the lettuce year-round. SINTEF researcher Ottar Bakås confirmed that no one touches the produce during this entire journey.
Partnership and location benefits
Himmelgrønt AS runs the site as a partnership between Coop Norge and technology firm Avisomo. The location near Oslo allows the company to distribute goods quickly to stores across the country. SINTEF is now analyzing potential for further automation in Norway.
Future automation outlook
Aleksander Lillienskiold noted that many tasks are still done by people but technology has evolved significantly. The project studied current automation levels and future needs for indoor vegetable production. Researchers believe technology can now automate manual tasks that were previously common.
