Analysis suggests the trapped heat would reduce crop production by an amount equivalent to the dietary needs of 276,129 people every year. The Australian Independent Planning Commission is expected to decide on the mine's future this week.

Professor Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick from the Australian National University states that small global warming figures can represent catastrophic local consequences. The joint owners Yancoal and Glencore hope to continue operations at the Hunter Valley site until 2045.
