New study shows music changes how brain processes food flavor
Researchers from the Department of Food Science published a new study in Scientific Reports showing that listening to music while eating alters brain activity related to taste.

Brain scans reveal shared activity
Scientists used functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure blood flow changes in the brain. The images showed that music activates regions involved in processing taste sensations. This finding indicates flavor is an experience created by the brain rather than just a property of food.
Music strengthens neural response
The study found that the brain responds more strongly when sound reaches the ears during a meal. Alberte Baggesgaard Seeberg noted this happens simultaneously with eating or drinking. Professor Janice Wang explained that these results move beyond simple questions about personal experiences.
