New study shows most river catchments behave like dynamic systems with memory

Researchers from the University of British Columbia analyzed data from 97 countries to reveal how landscapes turn rainfall into river flow.

Complex behavior dominates global rivers

The research assessed more than 80,000 catchments across 97 countries using over two million rainfall events. Scientists found that complex responses where similar rain creates different runoff covered 87 percent of the evaluated land area.

Simple catchments are rare

Only 1.5 percent of the studied areas showed simple behavior where a given amount of rain delivers roughly the same water to the river every time. The remaining group represents catchments with intermediate characteristics that do not fit the extreme categories.

Rainfall history matters for flow

Dr Ali Ameli noted that how much rainfall becomes runoff depends on conditions created by earlier weather and which landscape parts supply water. This finding challenges the common image of a catchment as a pipe that produces predictable amounts of runoff.
