New study shows early solar system favored hot rock over ice

Yale researchers published geochemical evidence in Nature Astronomy that the first million years of the solar system sorted for chondrules before icy dust.

Early bodies were mostly rock

The new analysis indicates that the very first solid objects formed between 83% and 92% chondrules. These early structures contained very little of the cold, water-rich dust found in later formations. Prior research could only document this sorting process in objects created two to four million years after the start.

Scientists found proof in meteorites

Researchers examined chondrites, which are the most primitive rocks collected from geological sites around the world. The study confirms that heat-forged bits of rock dominated the building blocks of planets and moons initially. This finding marks the first time scientists have seen such selective assembly happening within the first million years.

Study results appear in journal

The team led by Damanveer Grewal released their findings to the public through a peer-reviewed publication. Their work demonstrates that the solar system began with a preference for fire rather than ice. This conclusion changes how experts understand the initial timeline of planetary formation.
