New simulations show Milky Way formed from thousands of smaller galaxies

Scientists led by Harley Katz at the University of Chicago released new simulations showing the Milky Way began as thousands of galaxies.

Early universe galaxy collection

The region that would become our neighborhood started as a collection of thousands of smaller galaxies. Some of these early systems pumped out tons of new stars while others contained only gas or dead stars.

Detailed computer model results

This project named MEGATRON ran for three years on high-powered supercomputers to create the most detailed model to date. The six papers published in The Open Journal of Astrophysics allow direct prediction of what early telescopes would have seen.

Evolution into spiral disk

These simulations track how these galaxies coalesced over time to form the familiar spiral disk we observe today. Researchers can now predict what the early Milky Way looked like during cosmic dawn for instruments like Hubble.
