New interactive tool tracks private equity investments in U.S. health care
Researchers at Brown University launched a new tracker on Tuesday, Sept. 8, to map private equity investments in health care across the United States from 2015 to 2023.

Tool maps thousands of deals
The Private Equity State Tracker charts more than 6,000 transactions involving physician practices and hospitals. These investments cover all 50 states within the specified time frame. The system allows users to view data on a state-by-state basis.
Data fills information gaps
Private equity deals often remain undisclosed because of their private nature and limited regulatory oversight. Policymakers and journalists previously relied on commercial databases or manual research to find this information. The new resource aims to replace those fragmented methods with a centralized database.
Goal is evidence-based policy
Developers want the conversation to shift from ideological debates toward evidence-based policymaking. They argue that looking at private equity in isolation misses the bigger picture of health care corporatization. The tool helps address this issue by showing how different channels of investment expand together.
