New insect species Cretodorus noonoo found in 99 million year old amber

Researchers at Tel Aviv University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have identified a new insect species preserved in amber from 99 million years ago.

Ancient fossil reveals unique adaptation

The specimen trapped in tree resin hardened into amber during the dinosaur age. This tiny insect belongs to a family previously unknown to science. Its mouthparts reached nearly twice the length of its body.

Study published in scientific journal

The team examined 13 specimens preserved in amber from Neazoniidae. They believe the flexible structure allowed access to food deep inside tree bark cracks. The findings were released in the journal Insects.
