New Hubble survey analyzes massive stars in early galaxies

A University of Utah-led team using the Hubble Space Telescope has released a large dataset to study massive stars in nearby galaxies that resemble those from the early universe.

Survey targets metal-poor star analogs

The project is called the Treasury of Extremely Metal-Poor O Stars. Researchers use ultraviolet observations from Hubble's Cosmic Origins Spectrograph to gather data. These nearby galaxies serve as the best available models for stars in the young universe.

Models help interpret new telescope data

Grace Telford, lead author of the study, noted that Webb has raised many questions about early galaxy evolution. The new dataset allows astronomers to build better models of massive stars. These improved models are essential for interpreting observations now coming from the James Webb Space Telescope.
