New DNA study challenges historical views of mixing in Old Montreal
A University of Montreal team published genetic findings from Notre-Dame Cemetery that question accounts of settler-Indigenous relations in New France.

Ancient DNA analysis reveals new data
Researchers sequenced ancient DNA from 45 individuals buried in Montreal's Notre-Dame Cemetery. This project marks the first time such sequencing has occurred in Quebec. The work involved collaboration between UdeM, McGill University and the Montreal Heart Institute.
Historical accounts face scrutiny
Some historical records suggest considerable mixing happened between settlers and Indigenous peoples during the colonial period. The research team hoped to demonstrate this mixing through their genetic analysis of colonial cemeteries. Results published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences now raise questions about those relations.
