New AI tool helps engineers balance multiple enzyme traits
Researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara and Georgia Institute of Technology have developed an open-source AI tool called SynFit to guide enzyme engineering.
Enzymes require multiple performance traits
Scientists use enzymes to build, break, and rearrange molecules quickly in laboratory settings. However, improving one feature of an enzyme often causes another useful trait to fail. A useful enzyme must work quickly while staying stable and producing the correct product shape.
SynFit predicts better enzyme variants
The new tool looks for patterns in experimental data to predict which enzyme variants will perform well across several traits at once. It was built by a team including Yang Yang and Yunan Luo to help researchers navigate competing demands during engineering projects.
