New AI analysis tracks million-dollar US charitable gifts from 2021 to 2023
Indiana University researchers used a new AI method to examine large charitable donations in the United States between 2021 and 2023.
Total giving reached record levels
The study recorded 6,002 donations of at least one million dollars totaling 106.22 billion. Individual donors provided the largest share with 48.50 billion across 2,641 separate gifts.
Major gifts came from smaller amounts
Most contributions fell between one and two million dollars while very large sums made up most of the total value. Only 44 gifts exceeded 200 million dollars yet they represented 30 percent of all money given.
Donors faced a difficult environment
Americans gave during a period marked by the pandemic and a challenging socioeconomic landscape. The report notes that individuals, foundations and corporations played distinct roles throughout this time.
