NASA Roman Space Telescope has fuel for 22 years of science
NASA confirmed Monday that the Roman Space Telescope launched from Florida in August carries enough propellant for 22 years of operations.

Initial plans were conservative
Engineers originally loaded the four fuel tanks with enough propellant for a minimum five-year lifetime. They also planned for a potential five-year mission extension as a safety margin. Officials knew that a perfect launch and first course correction would leave a large reserve.
Fuel load exceeds expectations
The precise trajectory achieved by the spacecraft means the current fuel supply supports twice the initial timeline. Jamie Dunn stated that exquisite planning and brilliant execution resulted in this extended operational window. The observatory will now provide images with Hubble-like resolution but 100 times the field of view.
Comparison to previous missions
The James Webb Space Telescope received a similar boost after its picture-perfect launch in 2021. This Roman mission kicked off on August 30 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. The extended lifetime allows astronomers to study the universe for a much longer period.
