Mycologist identifies eighteen new waxcap species on Calf of Man
A visiting mycologist and two others surveyed fungi on the Calf of Man during a calm spell in autumn.
Survey doubles known species count
The team walked across sheep-grazed fields to find various types of mushrooms. They identified eighteen different varieties, which doubles the number previously recorded for the island. One rare date waxcap was discovered at a burrow entrance.
Island holds top European status
The Calf contains four sites that qualify for the highest European conservation ranking. This count is higher than the single site found in the entire Netherlands. The study has recently seen a resurgence of interest in local fungi.
