Mont Blanc summit height rises nearly two meters since 2023
French surveyors announced on Wednesday that Mont Blanc in France now stands 4,807.47 meters high after measuring the peak at dawn.

New measurement exceeds previous records
The current altitude is almost 1.9 meters higher than the reading taken in 2023. This increase brings the summit close to levels calculated by Joseph and Henri Vallot during expeditions in the 1890s. The team carried nearly 30 kilograms of equipment to reach the top at daybreak on September 17.
Methods used for precise data
Experts utilized satellite positioning instruments and a drone that captured more than 1,300 images. Ground-penetrating radar also probed the ice and rock beneath the surface to build a three-dimensional model. These tools help scientists track how snowfall, wind, and temperatures reshape the snowy cap.
Context of recent fluctuations
Records indicate the mountain lost about 1.3 meters in height during the past year before this latest gain. The summit has shrunk by 3.43 meters since reaching a high of 4,810.90 meters in 2007. Officials caution that surface altitude changes do not necessarily reflect the total volume or mass of ice.
