Medieval castle remains found inside University College Dublin building
Researchers identified Norman castle walls preserved beneath a modern structure at University College Dublin in Dublin.
Hidden medieval walls discovered
Professor Tadhg O'Keeffe from the UCD School of Archaeology confirmed the presence of surviving walls. These structures date to the early 13th century and were previously thought to be demolished. The current building exterior appears Victorian while the interior retains the older fortress features.
Victorian builders preserved history
Historical records suggest Georgian and Victorian renovators chose to build around the existing castle rather than remove it. This decision left the medieval courtyard intact at the rear of the property. The research findings were published in Archaeology Ireland magazine.
