International team builds comprehensive peanut genome map to boost yields
Researchers from China and Australia published a new genetic map of peanuts in Nature Genetics that identifies a hidden gene for higher yields.

An international team led by the Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences developed a graph-based pan-genome for cultivated peanut. The group combined ten new reference-quality genomes with four published assemblies to cover all six botanical varieties. They resequenced DNA from 2,320 accessions collected from 87 countries and regions.

The study uncovered a previously hidden gene that helps breeders create higher-yielding dwarf peanut lines.
