International Dyslexia Association updates definition after two decades
Researchers at Texas A&M University helped revise the International Dyslexia Association's definition of dyslexia for the first time since 2002.
Committee removes reliance on IQ tests
A three-person executive committee collaborated with a 15-member subcommittee to craft the new version. The group decided that the previous definition's emphasis on brain function was a weakness. They also removed the requirement for IQ testing in the updated criteria.
Definition includes non-English languages
The revised text now accounts for alphabetic writing systems beyond English and Western Europe. Dr. R. Malatesha Joshi noted that earlier versions focused mainly on specific European scripts. This change allows schools to better identify students with learning disabilities in diverse linguistic contexts.
