Helen Sharman opens new space museum at Grizedale Observatory
Britain's first astronaut Helen Sharman officially opened the John Dulcamara Space Flight Museum at Grizedale Observatory in Cumbria on Friday.
Donated collection features historic artefacts
Private collector John Dulcamara donated the items to the facility. The display includes a piece of the Apollo 11 command module from the 1969 moon landing. Other exhibits range from autographed photos to parts of actual spacecraft.
Sharman praises the exhibition quality
The astronaut described the collection as extraordinary and an amazing history of space flight. She noted that the items tell the story of the people involved in these missions. Sharman called the location a coup for Cumbria.
Observatory offers public telescope access
Grizedale Observatory opened to the public in May 2024 with telescopes and a planetarium. The site also hosts a meteorite laboratory and dark skies festival events. Visitors can view the exhibits alongside these operational facilities.
