Grey seal pups recorded at Cumbria nature reserve for twelfth year
Two healthy grey seal pups were spotted at South Walney Nature Reserve in Cumbria during the current season.

Colony history and breeding start
Grey seals began breeding at this location in 2015. Pups have been recorded at the site every year since that initial breeding season started.
Current count and survival rates
Marine conservation officer Beth Churn noted that two healthy pups were seen earlier this summer. Two other pups observed in the same period did not survive, while these latest ones are alive.
Population trend and records
The reserve holds the status of the county's only breeding grey seal colony. Last year saw a record count of 14 pups, though the highest total number of seals recorded was 563 in December 2024.
