German researchers find long-lived dormant blood stem cells in mice

Researchers at the German Cancer Research Center and HI-STEM Stem Cell Institute identified a special group of dormant blood stem cells in mice.

New reserve found in bone marrow

Scientists discovered a population of stem cells that stay inactive for an exceptionally long time. These cells keep their ability to create new blood cells while remaining in a dormant state. This group may help sustain blood regeneration and immune defense throughout the animal's entire life.

Previous classification methods missed these cells

Researchers typically use specific protein markers on cell surfaces to identify blood stem cells. One important marker is CD150, and cells lacking this marker were often not classified as blood stem cells before now. The new study shows that this previously overlooked group exists and functions differently than expected.
