Study maps future habitat range

Researchers used public photos from apps like iNaturalist to map where these animals could survive. The analysis predicts suitable habitat will extend into Texas, Arizona, Utah, California and parts of Washington and Montana. This projection is based on current adaptations to arid conditions.

Potential impacts on local ecosystems

If the species disperses widely, effects on cattle, native wildlife and plant communities could become significant. The team published these findings in the Journal of Mammalogy. They note that climate change will likely accelerate this expansion beyond current boundaries.
