Free diver captures footage of giant lion’s mane jellyfish off Welsh coast
A free diver spotted a massive lion's mane jellyfish with tentacles extending beyond visibility while swimming near Trefin Beach in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
Size and initial identification
The conservationist described the creature as being about the length of a bus or small train. He initially mistook the animal for a compass jellyfish before realizing its enormous dimensions.
Tentacle count and movement
Morgan reported that the number of visible tentacles increased from three to twenty during his observation. The Wildlife Trusts note that these long appendages are used by the species to catch prey.
Biological context and safety
Marine biologists state that while the sting is nasty, the animal is not dangerous to humans. This sighting marks the first time a lion's mane jellyfish of this type has been seen in Wales.
