Four new frog species discovered in Peru raise count to 31
Scientists named four new Oreobates frog species found near Cordillera Azul National Park in Peru, increasing the known total for this group to 31.

Research team identifies distinct frogs
Alessandro Catenazzi and his collaborators used genetic and acoustic evidence to describe these new animals. The study was published recently in the journal Diversity after collecting specimens from the region.
Previous count increases significantly
The known number of ground-dwelling Oreobates frogs has risen from 27 before this discovery to 31 now. Catenazzi noted that naming an organism is the essential first step for any biological research.
Potential medical value remains unknown
The researcher stated he cannot yet specify the value of these four species but suggested a cure for cancer might exist there. Each species represents its own world according to the veteran biologist who has described more than 55 frog species in his career.
