Engineer David Mummery develops invisible Swimmer Turbine for Scottish coastal towns

Engineer David Mummery developed a new tidal energy device called the Swimmer Turbine after testing it in a secret river location in the Highlands of Scotland during the early 2010s.

Testing the new generator design

Mummery tied a cord across a fast-flowing river and swam into the current to feel the water directly. He used this physical experience to visualise how a turbine should interact with the environment. The resulting device is anchored to the sea floor and remains invisible below the surface.

Power output and location details

The fiberglass and steel generator produces enough electricity to power approximately 30 homes. Tests began in the early 2010s at a site chosen specifically to avoid curious tourists. The project aims to provide energy for people living in coastal communities.
