An academic analysis published in June examines how climate change threatens the agricultural system of the Fens in eastern England.

Current engineering keeps water moving
The landscape covers parts of Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Norfolk. It relies on centuries of engineering including pumps and embankments to manage water levels. Around 87 percent of the region lies below the highest spring tides.
Multiple hazards overlap as climate warms
Rising sea levels, heavier downpours and hotter summers are expected to intensify over coming decades. Research found that these hazards increasingly overlap within one tightly interconnected system. By 2100 under a four degree warming scenario the region will experience more frequent flooding.
Agricultural productivity faces serious challenges
The area produces a third of the country's vegetables and supports tens of thousands of jobs. Declining summer river flows and accelerated biodiversity loss are projected alongside extreme heat. These threats reinforce one another within the existing drainage network.
