Cumbria Wildlife Trust begins peatland restoration work in Skiddaw Forest
The Cumbria Wildlife Trust has started a project to restore 435 hectares of damaged peatland in Skiddaw Forest, Cumbria.

Work includes fence repairs and rewetting
Staff will repair a six-kilometre boundary fence while carrying out restoration tasks across the site. The project is expected to last between three and four months without affecting public access to the forest.
Restored land acts as carbon store
The area contains one of the largest continuous sections of blanket bog in the Lake District. Improving the ground will help slow water flow off the fells to protect downstream communities from flooding.
Wildlife benefits expected after improvements
Specialist plants such as sundews and sphagnum mosses are anticipated to increase in number. Bird species like snipe that live on wet grassland will also benefit from the rewetted ground.
