Community archaeology project reveals major medieval monastery remains in Argyll
A community-led excavation in Argyll, western Scotland, has uncovered the physical remains of the early medieval Lios Mòr monastery.
Historical context and location
The site is located on the island of Lismore within the kingdom of Dál Riata. Historical records previously identified the location but lacked archaeological proof of its scale or importance. Excavations confirm it served as a high-ranking ecclesiastical center during the early medieval period.
Excavation findings and leadership
Dr Clare Ellis from Argyll Archaeology led the team that conducted the digs. The Lismore Historical Society originally launched the investigation to study a 13th-century cathedral on the island. Researchers found evidence that changed previous understanding of the monastery's character and extent.
