Expanded menu brings comfort food

The Chinese space kitchen now serves almost 200 food items ranging from dumplings to fried rice. Alongside traditional treats like mooncakes, the station offers dishes such as Kung Pao chicken and mapo tofu. Videos of astronauts eating freshly cooked meat and cakes have recently gone viral online.

Cooking technology improves daily life

Astronauts can now use air-frying equipment to bake chicken wings and prepare other meals in space. This capability contrasts with the limited packaged instant food available during Yang Liwei's 2003 mission. The shift from paste-like food to heated meals addresses strict requirements regarding floating particles and droplets.

Historical diet limitations end

Since Yuri Gagarin first traveled into space, compressed energy bars were the standard for long-duration flights. Yang Liwei joked at a press conference that he was envious of current crew members who enjoy baked goods. The new options make the Tiangong station feel less distant and more like home.
