Australian coral reefs face collapse risk within 50 years without drastic action

A global assessment led by the International Union for Conservation of Nature warns that all Australian shallow-water coral reefs could collapse by 2075 due to ocean warming.

Global classification of reef systems

The study evaluated ecosystems across 127 tropical and subtropical marine regions worldwide. Researchers determined that 96 percent of assessed coral reefs are now critically endangered under the IUCN Red List.

Threats to Australian ecosystems

All 17 Australian coral reef systems received a critically endangered classification in this report. Increasing marine heat stress and mass bleaching events are predicted under future climate scenarios for these areas.

Primary driver of decline

Climate-driven ocean warming is identified as the most widespread and severe threat to reefs globally. Rising temperatures cause mass coral mortality and place ecosystems under unprecedented pressure from heat waves.
