Archaeologists find medieval Chinese skeleton with missing nose at Henan burial site
Researchers in China have identified a woman buried face down in the Sanzhiyuan Cemetery in Henan province who lived between 1298 and 1404 CE.
Unique burial characteristics found
The excavation team uncovered only one skeleton among 213 burials that was placed face down. This specific individual also showed extensive damage to the area where her nose should have been located. Physical analysis confirmed she was a woman between 40 and 45 years old when she died.
Dating of the remains
Radiocarbon dating of a leg bone placed the death date within the late Yuan and early Ming periods. High-resolution CT scans were used to examine the skull after the initial discovery in 2019.
