Council approves advertising ban

Councillor Keiran Snape introduced the motion to stop fossil fuel companies from advertising on bus stops, banners, and billboards. The vote resulted in five councillors supporting the measure while four opposed it. The council previously declared a climate emergency in 2019 and aims to halve its 2020 carbon emissions by 2030.

Government warns of impact

The South Australian government stated the ban could jeopardise the future of the Tour Down Under village. This cycling race relies on sponsorship from Santos, an oil and gas company. The state government argues its policies are addicted to fossil fuel sponsorship.

Transition period details

The motion included a transitionary period before the full ban takes effect on July 1, 2027. Councillor Snape said the community must stand against state government reliance on fossil fuel funding.
