US-led coalition ends mission in Iraq after final withdrawal

Coalition concludes long campaign

The United States and its partners formally ended Operation Inherent Resolve on Wednesday. Troops had been stationed there since 2014 to fight Islamic State remnants after the group was defeated in 2017 and 2019. Forces previously operated across the country before restricting their presence to the autonomous northern Kurdistan region.

Baghdad marks new sovereignty

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi declared October 1 as Sovereignty Day to celebrate the completion of the state's security path. Government officials stated that the departure removes excuses for militant factions to keep their weapons outside state authority. The Iraqi government believes this transition strengthens national institutions and consolidates state presence.

Concerns over regional balance

Some observers fear pro-Iran armed groups could expand their influence following the departure of foreign forces. Kurdish officials expressed worry about the removal of US air defence systems in the semi-autonomous region. The Pentagon confirmed that targeted training and intelligence support will continue for Iraqi partners.
