Ethiopian rebel groups including the TPLF have launched an offensive in the Tigray region while accusing the government of triggering a return to conflict.
New coalition forms to depose government
Seven armed groups from across the country announced the creation of a new alliance on Sunday. This Ethiopian Peoples Forces Alliance for Survival aims to overthrow the administration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Addis Ababa. The formation comes as tensions rise just four years after a previous peace deal ended the devastating war.
Rebels seize control of regional airports
On Wednesday, forces from Tigray took control of three airports held by federal police. Ethiopian Airlines suspended flights to the area due to the current security situation. Both sides now accuse each other of starting open fighting again.
Attacks spread into neighboring regions
Tigrayan forces launched attacks into the states of Afar and Amhara alongside local armed groups. A humanitarian source reported heavy artillery fire on Thursday near the town of Yallo. Rebels also captured the border town of Abala on Wednesday.
