Lower court order stands

The justices declined to lift a lower judge's block on the policy. Two conservative justices, Thomas and Alito, issued dissents against the decision. The administration had asked the court to stop providing hormone treatments and certain surgeries.

Policy changes remain paused

Officials cannot taper treatments for inmates currently receiving them at this time. Litigation regarding efforts to change the policy continues in other courts. The Bureau of Prisons must maintain its current approach while legal challenges proceed.
