Proposed law curtails IGP powers

The provincial cabinet approved legislation that makes operational, administrative and financial decisions by the police chief subject to approval from the government or chief minister. Minister Chaudhry stated this change would reduce the inspector general of police authority over daily operations.

Constitutional framework limits provincial power

Chaudhry argued that policing remains a provincial subject under the 18th Amendment but legislation cannot override existing rules. He noted that provinces lack unrestricted authority to create laws inconsistent with the Police Service of Pakistan regulations.

Risks to security operations cited

The minister warned that altering the command structure could harm the force ability to maintain law and order while fighting terrorism. He emphasized that police personnel continue to face risks and make sacrifices despite limited resources available to them.
