Houthis deny launching drone toward Mecca while Saudi coalition claims interception

Coalition reports drone destruction

The Saudi-led coalition stated on Friday that it intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by the Houthis. Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki confirmed the event occurred in the Makkah region. He also noted earlier claims of intercepting a cruise missile targeting western Saudi Arabia.

Houthis reject the accusation

Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree denied carrying out any operation targeting Saudi territory today. His group called the coalition's claim of an interception a massive falsehood. Saree stated that no drone belonging to the movement was fired over Mecca.

Escalating regional hostilities

Both sides have reported military operations and attacks in recent days. The Houthis announced six attacks against Saudi targets including oil facilities and airports on Thursday. The conflict involves the coalition supporting the internationally recognized government since March 2015.
