Government plans to end electricity slab system punishing high users
Power Minister Awais Leghari told the Senate in Islamabad on Tuesday that the government is ending a tariff system that penalizes consumers for using more than 200 units of electricity.

Current penalty rules explained
Under the existing mechanism, households using up to 200 units receive a subsidy of around Rs13 per unit. Any consumer exceeding this limit by even one unit must pay up to Rs33 per unit and loses relief for six months. Senator Abid Sher Ali highlighted that bills jump significantly when consumption rises from 200 to 201 units.
Minister identifies subsidy issues
Leghari stated that numerous financially stable people with solar systems are currently benefiting from the protected category. The ministry is working on a new targeted subsidy system to assist only deserving consumers. Work was expedited to abolish the six-month bar preventing access to relief.
