Elon Musk spends over $200 million to lose Texas Senate race
Democratic senator-elect James Talarico defeated Republican incumbent Ken Paxton in Texas despite billionaire Elon Musk spending more than $200 million on advertisements.
Expensive ads failed to stop Democrats
Between Talarico, his opponent Paxton, and their aligned political action committees, more than $573 million was spent on advertisements. Reports indicate Musk contributed over $445 million to aid Republican candidates during the midterms, establishing him as the largest donor in American history for this election cycle. Most of that money went to Texas, which is the home state of Tesla and SpaceX headquarters. With a margin exceeding 12 points, Talarico defeated Paxton to become the first Texas Democratic senator since 1988.
Musk funding focused on culture wars
America PAC, to which Musk funneled $216 million, spent $34.7 million of those funds specifically in Texas. According to a 19th News analysis, Musk identifies the transgender focus in Anti-Talarico ads as a cultural war issue. Paxton received just $22.3 million in direct donations compared with the $146 million Talarico raised from voters directly. The Democratic victory across the country often came down to money but it did not happen as Musk hoped.
Governor seat also flipped for Democrats
During this election cycle, Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican incumbent Greg Abbott, who also received benefits from Musk's support. Despite the attempts by the world's first trillionaire, a blue Texas was finally achieved as a Democratic dream came true. Republicans underperformed nationally even in the states they won during these midterms elections recently. Musk endorsed Paxton on X but did not take on a surrogate role in the midterms.
