Interception of incoming projectiles

Major General Turki al-Malki announced the destruction of two cruise missiles over Riyadh and southern regions. Minutes later he confirmed air defences also destroyed two ballistic missiles heading for the capital. Loud booms were heard in the city shortly before authorities declared the danger had passed. The Saudi Civil Defence issued an alert to residents in the affected region.

Context of renewed fighting

This incident marks a continuation of hostilities that shattered the 2022 UN-brokered truce between the sides. After Saudi Arabia steered Arab nations into Yemen in 2015 to reinstate the internationally recognized administration, combat operations restarted. The Houthis have targeted airports and oil facilities since hostilities officially returned in July. Wider Middle East war tensions follow US and Israeli attacks on Iran in February.

Casualties from recent airstrikes

Yemen's Houthi-run health ministry stated Saudi airstrikes killed at least 33 people near Sanaa yesterday. Saudi authorities are currently investigating reports regarding these casualties caused by coalition operations. The group continues to launch drones and missiles against critical infrastructure in the kingdom.
