SECP marks 39,704 Pakistani companies inactive after four years of non-filing
The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan marked 39,704 companies as inactive on Saturday after they failed to file annual returns or financial statements for four years.
Consequences for dormant firms
These entities will appear as inactive in the SECP system and become visible to banks. Companies cannot open new bank accounts or access financial services until they file overdue documents. They also lose the ability to register changes in their directors.
Distribution across regions
The largest number of inactive companies is located in Lahore with 13,927 firms. Islamabad follows with 13,859 inactive entities, while Karachi accounts for 4,868 non-filing companies.
Legal requirements and risks
Filing annual returns remains a legal requirement under the Companies Act, 2017. The commission stated that prolonged non-filing weakens the corporate register and hinders efforts to prevent money laundering.
